Currently, all Melbournians are experiencing the challenges of social isolation with the lockdown situation. Through the first series of lockdowns, video call parties and online events were common. However, the charm of these events and their frequency has faded with each new lockdown, causing people to become more socially isolated. Our Director, Jodie Brenton wants to help all Australians access information regarding their mental health. Therefore, our head psychologist, Mary Magalotti and the Life Resolutions team have some tips to avoid becoming socially isolated.
- Write down and stick to a routine
Creating and maintaining a daily plan can help reduce stress and anxiety. Our bodies and minds benefit from having structure and having an idea of where our time and energy will go each day.
- Water over alcohol
It may be tempting to reach for a glass of wine or beer to help ease the boredom or stress of lockdown. An increase in drinking can have negative effects mentally, psychically and socially.
- Keep active
Physical activity can help boost your mood and relieve stress. Although keeping active during lockdown may be difficult, aim to do some sort of physical activity every day/
- Sleep is important
Sleep allows your body and mind to reset after each day. Maintaining a good sleep routine and schedule can help decrease a range of mental health concerns
- Socialise in new ways
While the Zoom parties may have decreased, it is important to find ways to socialise. Try scheduling a phone call while you walk, or chat to a friend about a Netflix show you are both watching.
